Art Dodson (left), adjunct professor of social work, is the recipient of the 2009 Idaho Social Worker Lifetime Achievement Award by the Idaho Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Dodson was nominated for the award by his colleagues and students for his personification of social work values and more than 40 years of work in the field of social work.
Dodson specializes in working with children and adolescents. He has made a significant impact in the lives of those served through the creation of new programs in Ada County Juvenile Court Services that led to a six percent drop in serious filings of juvenile crimes. Dodson also established a foster care program, Casey Family Programs, in nine states.
Nominators said Dodson’s work at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare positively influenced the direction of staff members in adoptions, foster care, child protection investigations and children’s mental health. Student nominators said Dodson’s example is inspirational and that through his teaching they understand the importance of the Social Work Code of Ethics.
